For 22 years I have been using the medium of mosaic as a monumental genre of art the documents stories of ancient heroes. In the last 3 series, I've explored the stories of three different protagonists recounted in Biblical texts to demonstrate that women, traditionally valued for virtue, beauty and devoted service to husbands and fathers, actually held powerful roles. These women and their extraordinary stories must be celebrated and highlighted for breaching ingrained power boundaries traditionally designated for their gender. In order to assign equal value in cultural and perhaps even in religious value to that of men, I offer my protagonists the same veneration and acceptability seen in the profuse and extravagant representation of male heroes in mosaic art throughout the ages. I achieve this by using monumental sizes for my mosaic panels and costly material for their execution, such as hand-made Venetian glass, gold and semiprecious stones.
