In 2004, three members of our Eastern Orthodox church in Victoria, BC, Canada attended a mural mosaic workshop given by Luciana Notturni at La Scuala Arte di Mosaici in Ravenna in order to learn the techniques needed to decorate the church.  I had the opportunity to travel back numerous times to further my studies with Luciana and then pass this knowledge on to students of the mosaic studio at the church.  After 18 years, the decoration of the cupola, the apse, and the altar is complete, and we continue to decorate the interior walls of the chapel.  Techniques including double direct, direct, floor mosaic and even micro mosaic were employed:  however, the experience goes beyond mosaic art education:  it has been a physical, intellectual and spiritual journey, bringing a small community to learn and work together and to create what has been referred to as "the jewel of Victoria".  Mosaic art requires a degree of planning, and in its labour-intensive form one senses it effects, its timelessness.
