David Bowie Tribute

Musician Syl Thompson and his band have been paying tribute to the musical works of David Bowie for more than three decades.

Thompson embodies Bowie’s exquisite style and persona and has been acclaimed as providing the most credible and realistic Bowie experience in North America.

Six highly respected musicians play each song as Bowie and his band performed them live. The look and feel of this concert replicates the Heathen/Reality Tour. The music spans the broad spectrum of Bowie’s hits from 1969’s Space Oddity to 2013’s Where Are We Now? The show is eerily close to hearing and seeing Bowie himself.

Thompson’s own musical journey has been chocked full of high points.In the early 80s, Thompson toured extensively in the South Pacific. Once he returned to Canada’s West Coast, he headlined for various cover bands and played in notable venues in Vancouver, including the Commodore Ballroom. In 1987, he opened for the Beach Boys at the Pacific Coliseum. Around this time, a manager of a Richmond nightclub heard him perform and remarked that Thompson had the look, moves and sound of Bowie and suggested he cover a few of Bowie’s songs.

Before long, Thompson was dedicating a full set to the music of David Bowie.

He renamed the band Major Tom and embarked on a year-long tour throughout North America. They played Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe and other major cities before returning to a Canadian tour which started on the East Coast.

Garrett Gregory is a breakout country artist with musical prowess and genuine charm. He is the second most famous musical act out of Hanna, Alberta, a farming community of about 2400 people. He doesn’t yet have a mural on the side of the local arena or curling rink, like his fellow Hanna-ites Nickelback, but a man can dream!

Gregory’s rock-infused country sound follows in the steps of Brothers Osborne, Chris Stapleton and Dallas Smith. Drawing from rock inspirations like Chris Daughtry and Patrick Droney, his unique brand of live entertainment fuses a tight, high-energy sound with a wildly driven show that will leave you wanting more.

Gregory is currently working on his debut album. “I like to call it ‘high adrenaline country,’” he says. “It’s country music with an added rock spin to give it that extra bite.” Produced by Dennis Hann from Calgary’s Wildr, the album’s tracks include the fun weekend anthem “Taste of Summertime,” “Rockin’ it” about that girl who immediately blows your mind, and the more serious “Save Me,” a ballad about that woman who keeps your life together when you’re broken. He writes his songs from the heart and from his own experiences in life that many can relate to. Garrett Gregory is really onto something with his release “Leavin’ You”. The rhythm guitar is insanely catchy. Gregory gives me Blake Shelton meets Luke Bryan in this track. The vocals are smooth and the melody will make you want to sing along. The live drums for the track have a nice build up to the chorus, which is blended and very creative. Big Awesome, based on Vancouver Island, are fronted by husband and wife team Doug Towle and Andrea Shannon. They can be seen performing as anything from a duo up to a full show band. Doug is one of Canada's premier guitarists having been recognized by Guitar Player Magazine and has performed across Canada, the US and Mexico. Andreas' sweet, soulful voice soars over Doug's husky baritone. Together they are a singularly exciting unit.
