The Watchmen are known to have supernatural powers. They protect the village  by warning the Chief of any approaching danger. As the poles age, in keeping with Snuneymuxw and other Pacific Northwest First Nations tradition, they were laid down as they became unstable so that they may slowly decay and return into the earth. This pole was laid down in Bowen Park, Nanaimo BC.
